Que Pasa?

While I was taking down the St. Patrick’s Day flag the other day because I wanted to put the Easter flag up BEFORE Easter this year, I was thinking about this Mexican Food restaurant review I wrote last month for a local magazine. Apparently a reader took her family to the restaurant for dinner based on the merits of my review (Yay!) and was pissed off because she found the article to be “misleading” (Boo!)

Basically – she was pissed because the free margaritas she got (it’s a new restaurant and they don’t have their liquor license yet) was “probably made with cheap alcohol” and I guess didn’t get her drunk enough. Oh – and that they charged her $2.00 for a coke and $13.95 for a meal which she felt was not “family friendly” but rather “outrageous”. Well -actually she felt it was “OUTRAGEOUS” (she capitalized the word for dramatic effect. ) You go, girl.

The funny thing is that she cared enough to write the magazine to complain that we weren’t doing our market research well enough and that she wasn’t going to visit restaurants we recommended anymore. So there.

I actually took offense to that statement because I really DID do my market research. I actually went there and blew through two weeks worth of Weight Watchers points on one meal so I could write a fair and accurate report. I ate myself silly for the love of my work and the dedication I have to my readers who deserve nothing less (I told myself that night) then for me to try each and every thing on the menu. I made an oath in Journalism school – dammit. And if that meant putting chili con queso on anything that would stand still for more than two seconds….then so be it. I am nothing if not diligent.

And by the end of the night – a bit tipsy. If cheap liquor in margaritas is wrong than I don’t want to be right because after two of them I felt GOOD. And even though I bowed my head in shame the next morning at weigh in at Weight Watchers….I’d do it again. For the people of my beloved city, first. And the love for all things covered in cheese, second.
