Happy New Year! I lost.

Wow. Where does the time go? We’re knee-deep into January and I haven’t posted since before Christmas. Such a slacker.

On my mind lately – like a lot of people this time of the year, is the dreaded New Year’s Resolution. I know that you can make a change for the better any time, but there’s something about the beginning of a new year that brings about a feeling of rebirth. The problem is, I’ve got so much to work on, I’ve been trying to think of what exactly to concentrate on – and I know that my start to the new year window is beginning to close.

I found out today that I didn’t win the Real Simple Life Lesson’s Essay Contest I entered last Fall. Sigh.

I really didn’t expect to win. But I had hoped. And I’ve found that when I have a little hope…a chance…a ticket in the hat so to speak, that I hang on to that with all my might when things get tough. The prize would have been a dream come true for me – $3,000 (hello?!) and a trip to NYC (a city I love) to meet the editors of Real Simple (oh my gawd!) and see a broadway play.

I entered the contest at the last minute. Literally. The deadline was midnight one day last Fall and I think I pressed the send button on my email at 10:40 p.m. CST….so it wasn’t my best work. BUT – I felt good about sending it in and I found myself thinking of the possibility of winning and smiling from time to time throughout last season and the hectic holiday season.

So finding out that I didn’t win brought me down a peg. Just because I don’t have another ticket in another hat right now. And, well – that kinda stinks.

So my New Year’s Resolution is to find more hats and get my tickets in them. I’d love to see my name in print in a big, fancy, national, well-respected, large paycheck giving publication this year.

Since my Life Lesson essay won’t be published in Real Simple…I’ll go ahead and post it here for you to read, now.

Enjoy and cheers to 2010 (and tickets and hats).
